Friends is an American television sitcom that revolves around six 20-30 something friends living in Manhattan. Episodes typically depict the friends' comedic and romantic adventures and career issues. Friends aired on NBC for 10 seasons, from 1994 to 2004 and starred Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LaBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer.
The show begins when Rachel Green flees her wedding day and seeks out childhood friend Monica Geller, a New York City chef. They become roommates, and Rachel joins Monica's social circle of single people in their mid-20s: struggling actor Joey Tribbiani, business professional Chandler Bing, masseuse and musician Phoebe Buffay, and newly divorced paleontologist Ross Geller, Monica's older brother. To support herself, Rachel becomes a waitress at Central Perk, a Manhattan coffeehouse where the group often hangs out; when not there, the six are usually at Monica and Rachel's nearby West Village apartment, or Joey and Chandler's across the hall.
Rachel is spoiled but warm-hearted and likeable. At the beginning of the series, she leaves her fiance at the alter and attempts to live independently for the first time. Much of the show follows her career growth from waitress to a buyer at Ralph Lauren.
Rachel and Monica were best friends from high school who reconnect when Rachel moves in with Monica. Throughout the series, she has an on-again off-again relationship with Ross.
Chandler is known for his sarcastic sense of humor and often depicted as being somewat hapless. For most of the series, Chandler works as an executive for a large multi-national corportion which he hates.
Chandler is best friends with Joey and was roommates with Ross in college. He does not have much luck romantically but later dates and marries Monica.
Monica is known for her obsessive-compulsive and competitive nature. Monica is often jokingly teased by the other for having been overweight as a child. She works as a chef at a variety of resturants throughout the series.
Monica goes through a series of failed relationships throughout the show, including one with her father's friend. She unexpectedly begins a relationship with Chandler, who she later marries and adopts two children with.
Ross is the most intelligent of the six main characters who prides himself on his rationality and is known for being a know-it-all. Ross works as a paleontologist at a museum and later as a professor.
Monica's older brother and Chandler's college roommate, Ross has three failed marriages during the series and is involved in an on-and-off relationship with Rachel.
Phoebe is odd, ditzy albeit sweet-natured masseuse who grew up homeless, sometimes telling her friends outlandish tales of life on the street. She is an aspiring musician who plays the guitar and sings songs with somewhat unusual lyrics at the coffee shop.
Phoebe is Monica's former roommate who moved out because of Monica's annoying behavior. After a series of dates and relationships with a number of men, Phoebe meets Mike Hannigan whom she eventually marries. She also became a surrogate mother for her half-brother, giving birth to his triplets.
Joey is a good-natured but not-so-bright struggling actor. Through out the series he has a variety, including a stint on the soap opera Days of Our Lives. Joey is obsessed with food.
Joey is a womanizer, with many girlfriends throughout the series, often using his catchphrase pick-up line "How you doin'?".
